Knee Pain Myths You’ve Been Told By Doctors, Friends, And Social Media – That Keep You In Pain, And Taking Pills

If you’re over 40 and have knee pain, you probably heard and tried all these before, without any luck.

Friends, family, and sometimes even doctors might give you advice they think is helpful, which can be misleading and stop you from getting the help that you need.

1.

MYTH #1 - MY KNEE PAIN IS NOT RELATED TO MY FOOT OR HIP

Over the years, I’ve treated many patients with foot or hip-related knee pain. Most of them did not know what was causing their pain and didn’t associate it with other body parts.

The truth is that your body works as a whole, and it is ludicrous to think that you shouldn’t address what is happening above or below the joint. We often get patients who used to do exercises from YouTube videos that are generic and simply won’t cure their complex pain.

The key is to know what the source of your pain is so that you can receive special treatment that will be adjusted to your specific needs. For that, you need an expert opinion and a care plan.

2.

MYTH #2 - THE USUAL GO-TO KNEE EXERCISES CAN HELP

When we Google exercises for knee pain, we can find that some websites will have the usual two, three, or four go-to exercises for knee injuries. Many people believe that those exercises will magically heal their ongoing problems.

This is not true. Everyone moves in a different way. Some knee exercises that are seen on different websites and videos might not even be knee-related and focus more on the muscles in other body parts. We often get patients who come to us with pain inside the knee that is related to a problem in their foot or hip.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Everybody moves differently, and it’s important to understand how a person moves in their particular way to be able to provide them with the right exercise plan.

3.

MYTH #3 - WEIGHT GAIN DOESN’T AFFECT THE KNEE

Many people choose to ignore the fact that putting weight on might be one of the causes of their knee problems. It’s a common mistake to dismiss simple factors like this.

Your body carries more weight around the knee joint, so naturally weight gain can cause you to feel pain around your knee area. At T4 Physio, we address that putting the weight on can contribute to knee injuries and pain and we educate patients about the risks and prevention of such injuries.

4.

MYTH #4 - FOOTWEAR DOESN’T AFFECT THE KNEE

A lot of the time our patients don’t know that the shoes they’re wearing might be the leading cause of their knee pain. Since they’re experiencing pain above the foot in a different part of their body, they don’t see how bad footwear can damage their knees.

Glutes have a massive impact on both feet and knees. People wearing pointy shoes end up having toes coming together forming bunions so severe that they might need surgery. A collapsed arch can also have an impact on your knee. All these factors contribute to foot-related knee pain.

Some activities you're doing like running or playing golf require appropriate footwear to keep the pressure off your feet and knees. That's why it's important to get customised orthotics which helped many golfers get back to playing golf and enjoying time on the course with their friends.

The body works together and not in isolation, it has many joints that move at the same time while we’re moving. That’s why we use a holistic approach to treat the knee pain.

5.

MYTH #5 - SQUATS WILL HEAL YOUR KNEE PAIN

People who are active and exercise regularly are at risk of getting knee injuries. It’s natural to think that exercises will help your knee pain, so a lot of people use squats as a cure for their knee problem.

Unfortunately, this can do more harm to your knee. If you squat without the right foot positioning, you make your pain worse. This is why we make sure that our patients don’t do exercises we haven’t told them to.

Exercise can be beneficial for you, but if you are suffering from knee pain and your foot position hasn’t been assessed, squatting can increase your symptoms.
